Lower Back Pain Right Side
Lower back pain in the right side can be caused by a number of reasons. Your lower back (lumbar area) is the weight bearing part of your body. Therefore, it is important that you take extra care of this part of your back. Lower right side back pain symptoms can be the result of serious medical complications; therefore, it is extremely important that you determine the cause of right side lower back pain.
Acute or Chronic
Right side lower back pain can be acute or chronic. There is a difference between acute and chronic lower back pain in the right side. Acute pain begins suddenly and is generally a sharp pain. It can also be mild and last for just a moment, or it could be severe and last for weeks or even months. Acute pain usually disappears after the underlying cause has been treated or healed. If you do not treat acute pain, it could turn into chronic pain.
Chronic pain continues even if the injury or underlying cause has been treated or healed. Pain signals can remain in the nervous system for weeks, months, or even years after the problem area has healed. This can cause physical effects, such as:
- Tense muscles
- Limited mobility
- Lack of energy
- Changes in appetite
Chronic pain can also cause emotional effects, such as:
- Depression
- Anger
- Anxiety
Chronic pain can cause you to fear that you will injure your lower back again. This might lead to hindering your ability to return to work or doing fun activities.
Causes
There are many different causes for pain in your lower right side back. Generally, the cause is from an injury to the back muscles, ligaments, or joints. A temporary injury that is not as severe will generally cause acute pain, while a severe injury, such as a fracture can result in chronic pain.
The following, aside from injury, can cause lower back pain in the right side:
- Muscle strain
- Imbalance in muscles
- Sciatic nerve compression
- Herniated disc
- Spondylolysis
- Osteoporosis
- Kidney diseases (kidney stones or kidney infection)
- Improper posture
- Improper stretching exercises
- Heavy lifting
Treatment
The treatment will depend on the cause. Before you can take a course of action for treatment, you will need to determine why you are experiencing pain. Some different techniques to determine the cause of pain include: X-ray, MRI, or CT scan. There are different ways you can treat lower back pain in your right side, which include, but are not limited to:
- Medication
- Lower back exercises
- Physical therapy
- Rest
- Surgery
Surgery is your last option, and it is important to know that surgery may not always work. Chronic pain could continue even after surgery.
Prevention
Prevention is the best option. There are some measures you can take to help you prevent lower back pain in your right side. Always stand and walk in an upright position. Do not ever bend from your waist. Instead, bend from your knees, especially while you are lifting weight. Consult your doctor before you start a new exercise routine. Make lifestyle changes where you need to so you can avoid lower back pain in the right side.

Lower Back Pain
I don’t know where it comes from or when it will show up but it is quite painful and it takes me away from my everyday routine. I am no good for anyone or anything. I just take my advil and go on the best I can till it subsides or it ends.
Hi, I have had lower right side back pain for about 3 weeks. I thought I might of picked up something heavy as I do housecleaning for a living. I can’t get a comfortable position when I sleep at night. It was getting better then I picked up one of my dogs and it came back. I thought it might be ibs. not sure.?????
not going to be ibs. probably pulled a muscle at work. try getting one of those whole back size heating pads. you’ll feel so much better if you relax and watch a real good movie with the heating pad on there. just try it for a few days or till the pain is better. just a good suggestion. goodluck!
I have been having lower right back for 2 days now its really sharp. it hurts sometimes when i lift up my leg. is it kidney problems ir is it just a muscle spasm? i havent lifted anything heavy that i can remember. & i dont know if this matter but i have been having white discharge/clear no ordor or anything. recently stopped taking depo shot need some help please.
Not trying to scare you but my aunt told me my mom and uncle had white discharge. They were both diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.my mom wen’t to the doctors 6 months before she was told she had cancer and they told her it was a back strain. It pissed me off becouse they said if they caught it 6 months earlier they might have been able to do something about it.Best of luck and GOD bless.
best thing to do for yourself is to get a pancreatic screening asap. then you can know if you can be rest assured to see other answers. I wish you the best and will cross my fingers !
i have this horrable pain on the lower right side of my back. i think it maybe because i bent at a wierd angle today while on the floor. at first, it didnt hurt but after ii took a nap and woke up 30 mins later, i cant even bend down…… goin to the docter soon so i hope it’s nothing bad!!!!!
I’ve got this pain for about a week now. First only slightly and then it goes worse. I can’t think of lifting anything heavy or havingg a cold back while being outside. I’ll keep having hot water bottles, hot baths and take painkillers. But would normally works for me doesnt do anything now. As I can’t have time off of work I try to avoid sudden movements and certain positions, also try to sit down wherever possible but then again my boss doesn’t really care and makes me work or do stuff I shouldn’t do in the way I would normally do it. I just hope it goes away soon.
I started to feel pain in my lower right back on New year’s day. The very next day I tried getting out of bed but couldn’t. I experienced the worst pain ever wrapped around my right thigh at the groin. I needed help to get up and the pain was so great that it made me sick to my stomach. I can’t do anything but sit down. I feel tired all the time. Every morning I need help to get up and it s so painful. Once I’m up the pain is less when I walk. Please help me.
Im having sharp severe pains at my rihgt lower back and the pain happens only around 4am it only cools down if I sock my self in very warm water.
i have been lower right back pain, the worst pain i felt was last night. i feel like i need to make number 2 but i could not. but, today i did but the pain still there. every time i have this pain it makes me feel the need to go.
I don’t know how it happened. One day my back just started hurting and by nightfall it got worse. For the next three days the pain was unbearable. Went to a clinic and the doctor prescribed pain killers, anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxers. The pills didn’t help much. It gradually got a little better. It’s been two weeks now and there is some pain there. I read somewhere that it might be a PSOAS Muscle strain.
